Celebrating the one year anniversary...

i miss my third home...

Today is a very important and special day. It's an anniversary! Of what, you ask? Of a life changing journey that started exactly one year ago today, with an 8 hour Iberia flight to Madrid, where I got the first taste of a truly "foreign" country, completely randomly met Trent at the airport, and continued on to what would undoubtedly be a major experience in my life, my first traineeship in Cairo. I still can't explain why in fell in love with this country SO much, but I did, and I'm spreading the warm fuzzies to all that will listen. My latest victim, best friend Anna from Chicago, who was convinced she just had to see Egypt after I couldn't shut up about it, and ended up spending a month there, also falling for the warm desert breezes and especially lovely laid back Dahab. Anna, I warned you, this place is worse than a drug!

Now, I sit here reading the preparation emails that were probably sent out last year before we arrived, scheduling all the fun activities that introduced us to the "Land of the Pharaohs". Koshari on a felucca, horse back riding at the Pyramids, trying to orient ourselves with life in Cairo, and failing miserably, but loving every minute of it. Wow...time really does fly.

And in the spirit of journeys, I'm preparing for yet another one. In about 5 hours I'll be on a train heading for Venice, Rome? I don't even know anymore. All I know is that after a few days in Italy, I'll be in Greece!!! And even better, I'll be meeting up with Anna, to reminisce about everything from high school to our seemingly unsatiable desires to see the world. Much fun awaits!!

...

“The majority of us lead quiet, unheralded lives as we pass through this world. There will most likely be no ticker-tape parades for us, no monuments created in our honor. But that does not lessen our possible impact, for there are scores of people waiting for someone just like us to come along; people who will appreciate our compassion, our unique talents. Someone who will live a happier life merely because we took the time to share what we had to give. It's overwhelming to consider how many opportunities there are for us to make a difference.” - Leo Buscaglia

Keeping busy...

It's hard to believe that in a few short weeks my study abroad year will have come to an end. Time really does fly when you're having fun. But as one door closes hopefully another will open. Planning this summer's travels as we speak, but also catching up on European travels since the weather is gorgeous and I barely have class in May. Two weeks ago I started off slowly, venturing out to Salzburg and Hallstatt, an adorable town (less than 1,000 people) on the Hallstaat Lake in the Salzkammergut in Austria. Then it was back to Vienna for a day of class, and off again to Eastern Europe. After an very eventful night which included getting thrown off of a train, I got to Poland to buy my 29 country Interrail pass, probably the best purchase I have ever made. From there it was Bratislava, Prague and Budapest, and now I'm back in Vienna for class and to finish writing papers and scheduling meetings and other such useless stuff. After that is off to Switzerland and Paris, maybe some detours along the way, but that all depends on time, since I have to again be back in Vienna on the 31st for class. A pain in the ass, sure, but also an exercise in time management. So that's the little update for now and hopefully I'll have some pics to include in the days to come, but that could very easily take some time...the travel bug strikes again!
